Pattern before numbers
A dense field, a restrained scatter and a focal constellation have different visual rhythms. More points are not automatically a better design. Compare the layout with the roof size and the seating position from which it will be seen. Discuss how the result should look with the lights off as well as on.

Respect the roof assembly
Glass panels, sliding shades, handles, lights and safety equipment constrain the available area. Photograph the roof and its controls before choosing a layout. A glass surface is not upholstered, and a moving shade requires a specific feasibility assessment rather than an assumption that it can carry the same construction as a fixed board.
Include retrimming and controls
Confirm whether the existing covering is being kept or replaced, where equipment can be installed and how it will remain accessible. Electrical and trim work must be considered together. The quote should identify the agreed layout and control approach rather than promise compatibility with every car.
Choose a light pattern that suits the roof
A fibre-optic starlight roof combines an upholstered surface with a separate lighting system. The important decisions are not only the number of light points. Their distribution, apparent brightness, roof shape, glass openings and the location of existing lamps all influence the result. A dense central field and a quieter perimeter feel different from an even arrangement across the whole roof.
Discuss the effect at normal evening brightness rather than judging only a dramatic photograph taken in complete darkness. Ask what controls are included and which functions depend on the chosen lighting equipment. Colour changes, dimming and animated effects should be specified for the actual system, not assumed from a reference video.
The material and lighting layout need to be planned together. Existing roof equipment, wiring access and the serviceability of the lighting components also need consideration. Glass areas cannot be treated as ordinary upholstered panels. If the original covering is sagging, resolve its condition as part of the scope instead of adding a decorative effect over a failing assembly. Bring photographs of the whole roof and identify the atmosphere you prefer. Assess the complete roof assembly
A headliner project begins with the board and the covering, then extends to the openings and trim that surround them. The visible fabric may have separated while the board remains usable, or the board may have damage that needs its own assessment. Staining and dampness introduce another question: the source of moisture must be understood before covering the area with new material.
Photograph the roof from the front and rear seats. Include handles, lamps, sun visors, pillars and any glass-roof opening. Tell us whether the sagging appeared gradually, after a leak or after previous work. Do not push adhesive through the face of the fabric or add fasteners as a way of preparing it for inspection; those changes can affect both the surface and the underlying piece.
Decide which surrounding parts belong in the quote. A new dark roof can look disconnected from pale pillars, while retaining the existing pillars may be exactly the restrained change you want. The edge treatment around openings matters as much as the broad flat area. Compare material thickness and texture in the actual roof layout, and discuss the removal route before any work starts. Compare samples where the interior will be seen
A colour choice is easier to judge beside the surfaces that will remain. Place a physical sample next to the door trim, flooring and dashboard, then look at it in daylight and under the cabin lighting. A warm ivory can read yellow next to a cooler white. Two black materials can differ noticeably in grain, sheen and undertone even when their colour names are identical.
The sample also needs to represent the intended product and backing. A thin decorative surface, a stretchable covering and a material suitable for a heavily used seat are not interchangeable simply because their faces look similar. Ask which product is proposed for each component, especially when the design combines perforation, curved panels and an exposed edge.
Choose thread, piping and adjacent inserts at the same time. A small thread card can look much more prominent when repeated across a large quilted seat. If matching an existing interior, assess the less worn areas as well as the faded surface; otherwise a new piece may be matched to accidental discolouration. Make the handover and scope easy to check
A useful quote identifies the pieces, proposed material, finish and work on the underlying construction. Check whether removal and refitting, padding, adjacent panels and decorative details are included. Two proposals can look similar while covering different parts of the interior. Compare the component lists before comparing the totals.
Photographs can support an initial estimate, but they cannot reveal every fastening, previous repair or concealed problem. If inspection changes the proposed work, the revised scope should be discussed before proceeding. Keep the agreed photographs and sample references together so a later colour or stitching change is not mistaken for the original request.
Plan the handover around the actual job. Ask whether the complete vehicle or the detached pieces are needed, and arrange a visit before travelling to the Hollywood atelier.
