When to repair, when to replace
- Fabric sagging in the corners or around the sunroof — the foam has failed. Replacement of the material on the original board.
- Stains, water marks, smoke — cleaning rarely works on foam-backed fabric; replacement gives a clean result.
- Torn or scratched fabric — a section cannot be patched invisibly; the whole board is recovered.
- Damaged roof board — cracked or warped boards are repaired or rebuilt before covering.
- Pillars and sun visors — recovered to match so the roof looks like one piece.
When the scope includes adjoining finishes, coordinate Sagging headliner: repair or replacement?, Car Headliner Upholstery, Pillars & Visors, Alcantara interiors: seats, steering wheel, headliner and trim before approving the material and seam layout. This keeps the decisions for individual pieces consistent with the whole interior.
Material options
OEM-style headliner fabric in the factory colour. Alcantara — the choice for sports and luxury cars, in black, grey, tan and custom colours. Leather — for a full-leather cabin or a two-tone roof. Starlight — a fibre-optic star ceiling built into the new headliner. Starlight headliner: a fibre-optic star ceiling for your car
How we do it
Interior trim, grab handles, lights and sensors are removed carefully; the board comes out through a door opening; old fabric and foam are stripped down to clean board; the board is repaired if needed, then covered with new material and pressed around every contour; everything is refitted and tested — lights, sunroof, microphones, airbag trim.
Cost factors
The size and shape of the board (a sunroof and panoramic roof add work), the material (fabric, Alcantara, leather), whether pillars and visors are included, and the condition of the board underneath. Send a photo of the roof and the make and model for an assessment. Car & Boat Upholstery Cost: How We Quote
Serving Miami and Fort Lauderdale from Hollywood, FL
The atelier is at 5790 Rodman St, Office 5, Hollywood, FL 33023. Headliner work is one of the fastest ways to make an interior feel new again; owners drive in from Miami, Aventura, Pembroke Pines, Davie, Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton.
Assess the complete roof assembly
A headliner project begins with the board and the covering, then extends to the openings and trim that surround them. The visible fabric may have separated while the board remains usable, or the board may have damage that needs its own assessment. Staining and dampness introduce another question: the source of moisture must be understood before covering the area with new material.
Photograph the roof from the front and rear seats. Include handles, lamps, sun visors, pillars and any glass-roof opening. Tell us whether the sagging appeared gradually, after a leak or after previous work. Do not push adhesive through the face of the fabric or add fasteners as a way of preparing it for inspection; those changes can affect both the surface and the underlying piece.
Decide which surrounding parts belong in the quote. A new dark roof can look disconnected from pale pillars, while retaining the existing pillars may be exactly the restrained change you want. The edge treatment around openings matters as much as the broad flat area. Compare material thickness and texture in the actual roof layout, and discuss the removal route before any work starts. Car headliner repair and replacement covers the repair assessment; the broader headliner service also considers coordinated trim.
Compare samples where the interior will be seen
A colour choice is easier to judge beside the surfaces that will remain. Place a physical sample next to the door trim, flooring and dashboard, then look at it in daylight and under the cabin lighting. A warm ivory can read yellow next to a cooler white. Two black materials can differ noticeably in grain, sheen and undertone even when their colour names are identical.
The sample also needs to represent the intended product and backing. A thin decorative surface, a stretchable covering and a material suitable for a heavily used seat are not interchangeable simply because their faces look similar. Ask which product is proposed for each component, especially when the design combines perforation, curved panels and an exposed edge.
Choose thread, piping and adjacent inserts at the same time. A small thread card can look much more prominent when repeated across a large quilted seat. If matching an existing interior, assess the less worn areas as well as the faded surface; otherwise a new piece may be matched to accidental discolouration. Record the approved combination in the project brief. Our Upholstery Materials: Leather, Alcantara & Marine Vinyl page gives an overview of the material families to compare before selecting a particular finish.
Keep the original equipment in the brief
Two seats from the same model can have different covers and internal equipment. Heating, ventilation, occupancy sensing, adjustable bolsters and seat-mounted airbags may affect which areas can be changed and how the work must be assessed. Tell us what is fitted; do not assume the equipment can be identified from a photograph of the leather alone.
Perforation is part of that discussion. A perforated appearance does not by itself establish that the material, backing and assembled cover are suitable for a ventilated seat. Likewise, decorative sewing is not a substitute for a manufacturer-specified safety seam. Safety-related components and restraint systems need the applicable vehicle guidance and a qualified assessment, separate from the styling choice.
For the initial enquiry, a normal photograph of the seat controls and the whole seat is enough. Do not unplug connectors, dismantle an airbag cover or remove a seat to obtain a better picture. Existing warning lights, an accident history affecting the seat or previous modifications should be disclosed before a scope is agreed. The upholstery brief should clearly identify the original functions intended to remain and any separate mechanical or electrical concern that needs resolution.
Make the handover and scope easy to check
A useful quote identifies the pieces, proposed material, finish and work on the underlying construction. Check whether removal and refitting, padding, adjacent panels and decorative details are included. Two proposals can look similar while covering different parts of the interior. Compare the component lists before comparing the totals.
Photographs can support an initial estimate, but they cannot reveal every fastening, previous repair or concealed problem. If inspection changes the proposed work, the revised scope should be discussed before proceeding. Keep the agreed photographs and sample references together so a later colour or stitching change is not mistaken for the original request.
Plan the handover around the actual job. Ask whether the complete vehicle or the detached pieces are needed, and arrange a visit before travelling to the Hollywood atelier. Do not remove safety-related or hard-to-access components yourself merely to simplify transport. For loose cushions or trim already removed by a suitable professional, label each piece and its orientation. After completion, compare the agreed surfaces, seam placement and fit together, and request the care instructions for the selected material.
