Repair, preserve or redesign
Begin by separating damaged areas from design preferences. A sound original panel may be worth keeping, while a worn entry bolster may need both upholstery and padding work. A colour-change project needs an inventory of seats, doors, armrests and other upholstered parts; switches, carpets, belts and hard trim do not change automatically. Agree those boundaries before comparing material samples.
Materials around the equipment
Leather, automotive microfibre and other suitable trim materials offer different textures and care requirements. Perforation and seam construction must be considered alongside the fitted seat systems. Tell us about heating, ventilation, sensors, airbags and previous alterations. No universal compatibility or manufacturer approval is assumed from the brand or a photograph. Confirm the exact material and construction in the agreed scope.
A useful first brief
Send the model and year, wide photographs of each row, close-ups of damage and any material reference. Photograph the trim you want to retain as well as the parts to change. The number of components, access, pattern complexity and substrate condition shape the quote. A worn cover and a worn seat are different problems
A pale patch on leather may be a change in the surface finish; a split at the edge of a bolster may continue through the material. A cushion that leans to one side can involve padding or support beneath an otherwise presentable cover. These observations lead to different scopes. Recolouring cannot replace missing material, and a new cover does not automatically restore the original shape of the seat.
For a useful assessment, compare the affected area with its opposite side and describe what you feel when sitting normally. Is the concern appearance, support, an opening seam, or several of those together? Photograph the whole piece before taking close-ups. A very close image of a crack can hide the construction that determines where a replacement panel should end.
The proposed repair should explain which layers are being addressed and which remain. If adjacent upholstery is already brittle or heavily stretched, a small intervention may leave a weak boundary. Plan a colour change as a set of boundaries
Start by marking what changes and what stays. Seats, door inserts, armrests and a dashboard can be upholstered components, while switches, vents, grilles, hard plastics and screens need a different assessment. A photograph with each proposed surface identified is more useful than asking for the entire interior to become one colour.
Look at transitions that are easy to miss in a front-facing image: the back of the front seats, the lower edge of a door, a folded armrest and the area exposed when a seat moves. Decide whether the new palette continues into those views. A two-tone layout can deliberately keep dark lower surfaces and introduce a lighter centre without implying that every existing black component will be replaced.
The exterior colour can guide an accent, but the interior also needs to work when the doors are closed. Compare your chosen shade with metal, wood and carbon trim under ordinary cabin light. Keep one dominant colour and decide how much visual weight the second colour should carry. Keep the original equipment in the brief
Two seats from the same model can have different covers and internal equipment. Heating, ventilation, occupancy sensing, adjustable bolsters and seat-mounted airbags may affect which areas can be changed and how the work must be assessed. Tell us what is fitted; do not assume the equipment can be identified from a photograph of the leather alone.
Perforation is part of that discussion. A perforated appearance does not by itself establish that the material, backing and assembled cover are suitable for a ventilated seat. Likewise, decorative sewing is not a substitute for a manufacturer-specified safety seam. Safety-related components and restraint systems need the applicable vehicle guidance and a qualified assessment, separate from the styling choice.
For the initial enquiry, a normal photograph of the seat controls and the whole seat is enough. Do not unplug connectors, dismantle an airbag cover or remove a seat to obtain a better picture. Existing warning lights, an accident history affecting the seat or previous modifications should be disclosed before a scope is agreed. The upholstery brief should clearly identify the original functions intended to remain and any separate mechanical or electrical concern that needs resolution.
Compare samples where the interior will be seen
A colour choice is easier to judge beside the surfaces that will remain. Place a physical sample next to the door trim, flooring and dashboard, then look at it in daylight and under the cabin lighting. A warm ivory can read yellow next to a cooler white. Two black materials can differ noticeably in grain, sheen and undertone even when their colour names are identical.
The sample also needs to represent the intended product and backing. A thin decorative surface, a stretchable covering and a material suitable for a heavily used seat are not interchangeable simply because their faces look similar. Ask which product is proposed for each component, especially when the design combines perforation, curved panels and an exposed edge.
Choose thread, piping and adjacent inserts at the same time. A small thread card can look much more prominent when repeated across a large quilted seat. If matching an existing interior, assess the less worn areas as well as the faded surface; otherwise a new piece may be matched to accidental discolouration.
