What the work involves
Show the lid open and closed, the hinge edge and any controls around it. Upholstery thickness must allow the lid to close and the mechanism to work. Collapsed padding, cracks in the base and loose hinges are distinct from surface wear and need to be identified before covering the part.
When the scope includes adjoining finishes, coordinate Door panel upholstery, Dashboard repair & upholstery, Dashboard, Door Panel & Console Upholstery before approving the material and seam layout. This keeps the decisions for individual pieces consistent with the whole interior.
Materials, fit and finish
A smooth contact surface and carefully positioned seam may be more comfortable than a prominent decorative pattern. Compare leather grain and padding firmness with the existing armrests. For a colour change, decide whether the console sides and gear-selector surround belong in the same scope.
What changes the quote
An accurate scope distinguishes the visible upholstery from the base, padding, fixings and adjacent trim. The number of pieces, access for removal, material choice and pattern complexity all affect the work. Tell us whether you want a close match, a contrasting accent or a broader interior change. Prepare your enquiry
Send a wide view, a close-up of the damage or detail, and the make, model and year. Include the reverse of loose pieces when safely accessible. Explain what should remain unchanged and share a colour or material reference if you have one. Contact the Hollywood atelier before bringing a vehicle, vessel or detached components. Inspection, transport arrangements and completion timing are agreed for your project.
A worn cover and a worn seat are different problems
A pale patch on leather may be a change in the surface finish; a split at the edge of a bolster may continue through the material. A cushion that leans to one side can involve padding or support beneath an otherwise presentable cover. These observations lead to different scopes. Recolouring cannot replace missing material, and a new cover does not automatically restore the original shape of the seat.
For a useful assessment, compare the affected area with its opposite side and describe what you feel when sitting normally. Is the concern appearance, support, an opening seam, or several of those together? Photograph the whole piece before taking close-ups. A very close image of a crack can hide the construction that determines where a replacement panel should end.
The proposed repair should explain which layers are being addressed and which remain. If adjacent upholstery is already brittle or heavily stretched, a small intervention may leave a weak boundary. Compare samples where the interior will be seen
A colour choice is easier to judge beside the surfaces that will remain. Place a physical sample next to the door trim, flooring and dashboard, then look at it in daylight and under the cabin lighting. A warm ivory can read yellow next to a cooler white. Two black materials can differ noticeably in grain, sheen and undertone even when their colour names are identical.
The sample also needs to represent the intended product and backing. A thin decorative surface, a stretchable covering and a material suitable for a heavily used seat are not interchangeable simply because their faces look similar. Ask which product is proposed for each component, especially when the design combines perforation, curved panels and an exposed edge.
Choose thread, piping and adjacent inserts at the same time. A small thread card can look much more prominent when repeated across a large quilted seat. If matching an existing interior, assess the less worn areas as well as the faded surface; otherwise a new piece may be matched to accidental discolouration. The pattern should follow the shape of the piece
A flat drawing of diamond quilting does not show what happens when that pattern wraps around a bolster. Panel curvature, seam allowance and the direction of the material change the appearance once the cover is fitted. The useful design question is where the pattern begins, where it stops and how it meets the neighbouring smooth panel.
Consider scale before adding more lines. A small seat insert may suit a simpler rhythm than a broad rear bench. If the pattern continues across separate pieces, decide which visual axis matters most: the seat centre, a headrest, the backrest or the door insert. Those pieces may be seen from different angles, so a convincing relationship is more useful than forcing every seam into the same grid.
Padding beneath the decorative panel also changes how raised or restrained the stitching looks. Choose the desired depth with a physical sample and assess the feel as well as the photograph. Make the handover and scope easy to check
A useful quote identifies the pieces, proposed material, finish and work on the underlying construction. Check whether removal and refitting, padding, adjacent panels and decorative details are included. Two proposals can look similar while covering different parts of the interior. Compare the component lists before comparing the totals.
Photographs can support an initial estimate, but they cannot reveal every fastening, previous repair or concealed problem. If inspection changes the proposed work, the revised scope should be discussed before proceeding. Keep the agreed photographs and sample references together so a later colour or stitching change is not mistaken for the original request.
Plan the handover around the actual job. Ask whether the complete vehicle or the detached pieces are needed, and arrange a visit before travelling to the Hollywood atelier. Do not remove safety-related or hard-to-access components yourself merely to simplify transport.
